How I Killed Another Succulent - Succoholic Series #8
Post # 8: Day 32 since POS (planting of succulents).
This is the story of how I killed another one of my succulents.
This is the story of how I killed another one of my succulents.
Receipt and Potting
First off, when I received this succulent, it looked normal: bottom petals horizontal, with lots of baby succulents shooting off from the bottom (bottom-left plant in the photo). I didn't get time to pot it immediately so I left it on water therapy overnight.
When I did repot it, the rosette turned "inside-out", as in the petals bent so much that I could put it down and only the petals will touch the ground, while the roots were tucked up in the center concave of the bottom of the plant. The baby shoots added to this bend so there was some distance from the bottom-most leaf/shoot to the bottom of the roots. This made it difficult to plant the succulent because I couldn't get the roots into the soil.
I somehow managed to plant it with a tiny portion of the roots in the soil, but I couldn't move the pot around so much since the plant wiggled a lot.
For the past several weeks, this potting worked, but the plant visibly wasn't doing well; the leaves didn't look healthy at all.
Youtube Influence
Being the succoholic that I recently became, I was watching some youtube videos of other succoholics caring for their succulents. I found lots of footage where they removed most of the leaves, shoots, flowers, and even some dried roots from the succulents so the plants could thrive. They looked quite carefree and confident with their operations that I got convinced that I should do the same for my struggling succulent.
The Operation
Freshly-motivated and feeling like a self-educated genius, I took the succulent off its pot (very easily), removed all the shoots, removed most of the leaves (those that were pointing downward), and replanted the newly-cleaned-up succulent. On the same day I watered it along with the rest of my succulents as the soil was really dry.
Death
Fast forward almost a week and this is what my succulent looks like now:
It's dead.
The only specimens I have of this kind of succulent are the shoots I previously removed. I stuck them into a container of pumice, hoping they would grow roots. Now the bottom part of their stems are rotted, so I cut them off, then stuck them again in pumice. I am hoping they somehow survive despite me. =(
