Experimenting with Succulent Water Propagation - Succoholic Series #10

by - Sunday, May 13, 2018

Yesterday was day 40 since POS.

This succulent has been showing signs of drying up of the stem for a while now. I was hoping that the problem was topical and that it would recover. However, the  problem just seemed to be worsening as time goes. So yesterday, just before leaving for a short vacation, I decided to finally do something about it.

Fearful that the problem would spread to the mother stem, I cut off the infected stem close to the base. This is what the inside of the infected stem looks like.

In an effort to salvage the cutoff, I removed most of the leaves and cut away the infected area. I then laid them (leaves and stems) on a bed of dry pumice.

That would have been it, but suddenly remembering a youtube video I saw, I realized that was a perfect opportunity to try water propagation.

And so I got a shot glass, taped toothpicks to the top and placed the topmost cutoff, the stem, and two leaves between the toothpicks.

I then filled the shot glass with water until the water touched the plants (I used rainwater my mother collected from the last shower).

I also added one more leaf because there was still space.

I still have two leaves remaining that I left on dry pumice. These will serve as control specimens so I could see how well the water propagation works.

I’ll be coming home in two days. Hopefully, I’ll see some development by then, and I shall give you an update. :)
